Power in the media: Stereotypes
- Characteristics that can lead to misconceptions about groups of people.
- Simplified version of representation.
- Abroad generalisation used to describe a group of people.
- "Developing brains don't have the ability to discern TV from reality"
- cognitive shortcuts
- Can result in bias
- Stereotype threat- people exposed to certain stereotypes about themselves will typically under-perform. (e.g. 1995, experiences found black students performed worst on standardized tests than white student when exposed to stereotypes.) when stereotypes weren't emphasized they did just as well, and even better than white classmates.
Pop culture shapes how we see reality
People of different groups represented in many ways vs. one-dimensional or some sort of characters over and over again.
- Monolithic= simplistic characterisations e.g. muslim/criminalisation of black people
